College Background

Commitment
I understand the following commitments as conditions of any potential internship with DCSI.
Note on Generative AI
Please do not use Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, in your application. If you need writing support, please consider the wonderful peers and staff at the Writing Center.
Experience

This section helps the selection committee better understand what experiences you bring to this potential internship opportunity. It is a chance for you to show how you are prepared for this experience in a diversity of ways, and elaborate on your desire to make change for the common good.

The selection committee is interested in how you have grown from opportunities and experiences in the past. Please describe three significant volunteer experiences, paid work experiences, travel, extracurricular activities, and/or academic projects/programs AND specify the ways you grew from them. (100-200 words per experience)

Skills

In order to best place you within a predesigned cohort internship, it's important that the selection committee understand what skills you possess and what skills you're looking to develop.

Motivation and Goals

At DCSI, we're always asking students, "what's your why?" It's helpful for the selection committee to fully understand your motivation for pursuing social impact.

Work Environment

Work environments and/or work activities in some of our internship placements can be particularly intense experiences. Working with some of our partners may involved direct contact with individuals experiencing severe trauma, addiction, mental health issues, and other factors that require a high level of empathy and understanding. This can happen both through the work you'll be doing or by nature of the neighborhoods our partners are located in.

We also have internships addressing a variety of social issues, some of which you may not be comfortable engaging with such as harm reduction or reproductive health.

The questions below will help us determine the best fit for placements. There are no wrong answers and this will not affect acceptance to the program.

Cohort-specific questions

The question(s) below pertain to a specific cohort/city. While we highly encourage students to apply to multiple cohorts, please only apply to the cohorts you are genuinely interested in and for which you would accept a spot in if offered one. You must apply separately for each cohort, but you may copy and paste your answers to the same common questions found in each application.

Please also note - budgeting is an important part of the planning for your summer internship. As stipend amounts vary for each cohort due to differences in living expenses, please visit the cohort webpages to view stipend estimates for each city.

San Francisco Innovation Cohort

These internships introduce students to the cutting-edge nonprofit landscape of the Bay Area. Students engaged in these internships are immersed in the vibrant and creative atmosphere characteristic of San Francisco and work with innovative organizations who create change in new ways.

To DPCS Internship applicants:
The above-named applicant has applied for a DCSI Internship award to undertake an unpaid internship. Although this volunteer experience may enhance the intern’s academic progress at Dartmouth College, the project is an independent activity.  Applicants acknowledge that they are responsible for conducting themselves in accordance with acceptable standards of behavior in the jurisdiction in which the proposed activities are conducted and, if required, for securing governmental or other approvals needed to conduct the internship.

Health Issues
It is the responsibility of the applicant and his/her parents/guardians to maintain adequate health insurance coverage, including (if desired) insurance for emergency medical evacuation.  In the case of preexisting or chronic medical or psychological problems, applicants are advised to consult their health-care provider as to the feasibility of the project.

Security Issues
Applicants are responsible for adherence to the laws of the jurisdiction in which the internship activities are conducted and in ascertaining in advance the appropriate standards of personal comportment. They are also responsible for obtaining information on current research conditions and foreign government requirements. Should the applicant become involved in a legal difficulty (such as arrest or a civil complaint), it is the applicant’s responsibility to handle the situation. In addition, applicants should keep both the Center for Social Impact and their parents/guardians informed of their address at all times.

By signing this form, applicants acknowledge that they are assuming certain risks in conducting the project and release Dartmouth College, its officers, employees, and agents from any and all claims and causes of action for loss of or damage to property, financial loss, personal injury, or death arising out of any travel or activity conducted as a part of or in connection with this project.
